Freedom for the Blind

Brian Bushway riding his bike through water

World Access for the Blind is working to provide the means for the blind to live the highest quality of life they choose.

Our Objectives

World Access for the Blind is mobilizing resources to expand its scope to include all aspects of functioning. For the present, our goals focus primarily on movement and navigation issues.

World Access for the Blind is investigating the effectiveness and applications of long-standing and innovative strategies and technologies for facilitating access to the world by the blind. The blind have tried many approaches throughout history to improve their interaction with the world. We are establishing a comprehensive, functionally based criteria to examine these approaches carefully, and determine how they may impact nonvisual functioning in a holistic way.

World Access for the Blind actively pursues, mobilizes, and applies modern technology and instructional strategies to develop a vision prosthetic system. Such a system would stand as the crown jewel in a comprehensive approach to replacing vision with other ways of seeing.

World Access for the Blind is gathering, examining, and implementing a dynamic approach that improves every aspect of nonvisual functioning. This is known as the "Vision Replacement and Enhancement" approach.

World Access for the Blind's Vision Replacement and Enhancement approach will be made available to all those who can benefit.

World Access for the Blind maintains ongoing video and written records that offer detailed chronicals of student progress. This information is used for informative purposes, promotion and public awareness.

World Access for the Blind demonstrates and disseminates the results of the Vision Replacement and Enhancement approach to professional and blindness communities, and the world at large. The proof of the effectiveness of the Vision Replacement and Enhancement approach lies in the competitive level of functioning of those influenced by it. We simply demonstrate what we do, and let the world respond. We openly invite constructive input.

World Access for the Blind encourages and maintains open constructive communication between professional and consumer entities relevant to blindness.

World Access for the Blind raises public consciousness about blindness by disseminating information to the public at large about the full potential of blindness and access issues faced by blind people.

World Access for the Blind knows that social prejudice and ignorance constitute the key barriers facing the blind. We are dismantling these barriers by demonstrating the abilities of the blind to the public at large, and by clarifying the access issues that confront the blind. The destruction of these social barriers will clear the way for the blind to proceed freely with respect, honour, and dignity.
